Rwanda Grenade attack kills 2, wounds 16 PDF Print E-mail

Two people have been killed in a grenade explosion in Rwanda's capital, Kigali, police have said.

Sixteen others were wounded by the blast near a market in Gasabo district.

The security forces have blamed previous grenade attacks on the FDLR Hutu Rwandan rebels in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Leaders of a new opposition party in exile, who were also accused of having links to grenade blasts in 2010, condemned Tuesday night's explosion.

New Law Calls for 14 years of Imprisonemnt

The Nigerian senate has passed a bill banning same-sex marriages, defying a threat from Britain to withhold aid from nations violating gay rights.

The bill by Africa's most populous nation calls for a 14-year sentence for anyone convicted of homosexuality. Anyone who aids or "abets" same-sex unions faces 10 years in prison, a provision that could target rights groups.

It goes to the nation's House of Representatives for a vote before President Goodluck Jonathan can sign it into law.

The pope made his comments during a meeting with the ruling elite of Benin, a country that has provided a rare example of functioning democracy in the region.

Former Rwanda mayor convicted in murder of 2,000 refugees PDF Print E-mail

The U.N.-backed war crimes tribunal for Rwanda has sentenced former mayor Gregoire Ndahimana to 15 years in prison. Ndahimana was found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity in connection with the killing of more than 2,000 Tutsi refugees in his village in 1994. The atrocity was just one of many that occurred in that African nation against tribal villagers that year.

Ndahimana failed to prevent police from bulldozing a Catholic church in Nyange, where 2,000 people were in hiding. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda also found that he assisted in the following massacre.

Rwanda moves from Being Francophone to Anglophone as it join Commonwealth

Rwandan president Paul Kagame had a double toast as the federal court in Oklahoma on Friday dismissed a lawsuit against him brought by the widows of two assassinated African presidents, ruling that he had immunity in the United States. On the other side of the world in Perth, Australia Rwanda was officially welcomed as the newest member of the Commonwealth during the 21st Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
