Malawi gay couple gets maximum sentence |

The Blantyre court gave a young gay couple the maximum sentence of 14 years of imprisonment over "gross indecency" and "unnatural acts". The sentence may lead to cut in donor aid to Malawi. Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga were convicted for "gross indecency" and "unnatural acts" after holding a traditional engagement ceremony in Malawi in December. The young couple in their twenties has been imprisoned ever since.The judge in Blantyre, Malawi's second city, handed out the maximum sentence for the offence. Sentencing the couple to 14 years in prison, Judge Nyakwawa Usiwa-Usiwa explained he wanted to protect the general public in Malawi "from people like you."

Africa's biggest mobile phone operator MTN recently announced a multi-million dollar software deal with global billing firm Intec with the aim of launching 3G (third generation) mobile communications in South Africa. This deal is a significant win for many reasons - and not just for the companies involved. It could soon provide South Africans with cheap basic local calls.
Under the terms of the contract Intec's so-called "Singl.eView technology" will be installed to handle billing for MTN's South African operation, which has over 7.7 million pre-paid and post-paid subscribers.

Construction of a new $780 million power line linking Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya is expected to start towards the end of 2011, and be operational by 2015, according to those involved with the project.
About 1,447 kilometers long, the high voltage transmission line will start at in the south of Zambia, travel Arusha in Tanzania before landing in Kenya's capital Nairobi.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $780 million out of which $380 million will be for the section in Zambia, $310 million in Tanzania and $90 million in Kenya.

Baganda not ready to Vote On or Negotiate Inalienable Rights
The former Katikiro of Buganda, Daniel Muliika has said that the people of Uganda are not ready to negotiate their rights or subject them to a vote. Mulika who was in the United States to launch a new organization, Gwanga Mujje International said that to do so goes against the meaning and importance of human rights.
