Obama Should Emphasize Human Rights |

(Washington, DC) - The incoming Obama administration will need to put human rights at the heart of foreign, domestic, and security policy if it is to undo the enormous damage of the Bush years, Human Rights Watch said today in issuing its World Report 2009.
US leadership in promoting human rights will be vital, Human Rights Watch said, because at present the most energetic and organized diplomacy addressing human rights is negative - conducted by nations trying to avoid scrutiny of their own and their allies' abuses. And the human rights crisis in Gaza, where hundreds of civilians have been killed in fighting between Israel and Hamas, underscores the need for concerted international attention to the rights abuses that plague today's armed conflicts, Human Rights Watch said.

KINSHASA, 14 January 2009 (Wire Services) - A rebel splinter group in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has said it is ready to back joint operations planned by the governments of DRC and Rwanda against Rwandan Hutu insurgents based in the Kivu provinces.
The self-styled new leader of the Congrès national pour la défense du peuple (CNDP), Desiré Kamanzi, also said he would not recognize the outcome of ceasefire negotiations in the Kenyan capital between the DRC government and the main CNDP wing led by renegade general Laurent Nkunda.

JOHANNESBURG- Jacob Zuma, leader of South Africa's ruling ANC, will go to the Constitutional Court in a final bid to have corruption charges against him dropped, his lawyer said on Wednesday.
The appeals court on Monday overturned a lower court ruling in September dismissing the graft charges against Zuma.

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) yesterday formally charged a former Vice-President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with multiple counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in the Central African Republic (CAR).
The former warlord and vice-president of the Democratic Republic of Congo organized a systematic campaign of rape, torture and looting against civilians in a neighboring country, a war crimes tribunal in The Hague was told today.Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, who was the President and Commander in Chief of the Movement de libération du Congo (MLC), is accused of directing his militia to commit murder, torture and rape against civilians as well as to commit outrages upon personal dignity and pillaging in an attempt to suppress support for anti-government rebels during the 2002-2003 bloody power-struggle in the CAR.
